Large turnout at the opening of the event highlighting the fascination of marble in all its forms of expression. Every evening, from 8 to 12 June, sculptures, installations, exhibitions and performances to be admired. Great anticipation for the round table “Designing with marble” coordinated by Philippe Daverio with Mario Botta and Mario Bellini (Thursday 9th, at 6 pm, Chamber of Commerce main hall). Carrara, 8 June 2011 The anticipation for Carrara Marble Week, the event organised by CarraraFiere turning the whole town into a stage with marble as the star, was shown by the great turnout to see the Preview in a party atmosphere under the large music stand in Piazza Alberica in the town. The setting was even more spectacular as it featured dancers in evening dress dancing around the large blocks of marble placed by partner companies between the palatial Fine Arts Academy and Carrara Savings Bank. The town mayor, Angelo Zubbani, welcomed everyone defining the Marble Week, “a project designed for the town which creates a dialogue between marble and the places that belong to it. An event which has attracted great attention and expectations in the town at the centre of a large-scale marketing action offering great opportunities, especially in view of CarraraMarmotec 2012”. The same enthusiasm was shared by Giorgio Bianchini, chairman of CarraraFiere, who reminded those present that this event “is a new approach to create a dialogue between the town and marble. We have sought new forms and new stimuli to continue the relationship with the world of marble based on three interrelated elements: marble, the territory and the trade fair which is CarraraMarmotec. This event– Bianchini concluded – is the result of our ongoing commitment on the way to CarraraMarmotec”. Appreciation from Paolo Ignesti too, representing Toscana Promozione which “has supported the event because it is based on the relationship between an important economic resource which is marble and the territory” while the Chamber of Commerce director, Alessandro Beverini, emphasised the joint efforts on the part of the various bodies to organise the visit of forty architects who will be in Carrara for the event. Paris Mazzanti, general manager of CarraraFiere closed underlining the importance of marble in all its forms of expression and quoting the art critic Philippe Daverio: “Carrara is marble, because humanity decided it”. A long visit followed touching the many focal points coordinated by Silvia Nerbi and Paolo Armenise: from the photographic exhibition of the quarrymen’s faces in Piazza d’Armi to the exhibition “From eleven to zero” in the main auditorium of the Fine Arts Academy, open for the occasion, to Piazza delle Erbe with a magnificent giant reproduction of David enhanced by skilful lighting and surrounded by the Isole in Arcipelago sculpted by Luciano Massari. Amazement and admiration from the group arriving in Piazza Alberica where “Zero”, the large marble cube, located at the centre of a play of lights, relates to the marble paving and the Renaissance architecture. Great interest was also shown in the pieces in Via Rosselli and the rooms in the historical buildings staging the large design shows with pieces by UP & UP and the “slabs” by Disegnare il marmo suggesting new uses of this material with its infinite attraction that becomes sculpture, art and architecture throughout the world. After the presentation, the core of the “happening” with the town coming to life not only by day but especially by night. The first event on the agenda is the meeting between the town and the companies together with the 40 architects from all over the world who have come to further their knowledge about the techniques and culture of marble. They will be taking part (Thursday 9th, 6 pm at the Chamber of Commerce) in the round table presented by Philippe Daverio entitled “Designing with marble”. This will be an all-round discussion with leading contemporary architects such as Mario Bellini, Mario Botta, Peter Marino (senior project architect at Spadaio offices in New York) and Alexander Spikes (associate director of the prestigious office Skidmore, Owen and Merrill). At the end of the debate which will provide a great occasion to hear the various opinions of the important speakers and authorities the public may admire the installations and works illuminated by skilful lighting designed to show the pieces in a different “light”. Carrara Marble Week is free of charge; open every evening, from 8 to 12 June, from 5 pm to midnight
