The two training courses on the Nigerian stone quarrying systems took place in Kaduna and in Osi, with the two very well reputed international Consultants Sergio Matteoli and Marco Cosi, both of them Geologists with a long experience in the quarrying training all over the world.
In Kaduna the participants were 31 shared in two groups and in Osi the course was attended by 9 course participants.
All the participants were been able to assist to the following quarrying operations:
•    the realization of vertical and horizontal holes to be crossed to each other to let the diamond wire pass through and execute the necessary cuts in order to isolate the bench;
•    the realization of the ring with the diamond wire to be able to execute the cut (calculation of the length of the wire, the kinking of the wire for a homogenous consumption, connection of the diamond wire);
•    preparation of all the cut and perforation equipment;
•    hand employment of the perforation equipment (use of pneumatic hammers) and correct holes alignment for the detonation;
•    preparation of the working ground floors for the machinery and the perforation systems;
•    holes and cuts cleaning for the application of the explosive;
•    squared off of the blocks;
•    removal of the waste materials;
•    block measuring;
•    use of the handling and lifting machines for detaching, removing and transporting the blocks;
•    analysis of the morphology of the new potential quarrying sites in order to organize all the quarrying activities;
•    management of the quarrying waste materials and the safety of the quarry workers and the technicians.

The result of the training course, carried out in absolute respect of the working plans of the quarries hosting the course, was the production of a regular shaped-block of big dimensions to be processed afterwards in the saw-mill and in the factory.
The participants were extremely motivated, both those already working in a quarry and willing to improve their professional performances and those who were about to invest and start a stone quarrying activity.

Since the deep interest to develop other economic and commercial activities able to produce new employment out of the ones concerning the exploitation of oil and gas, this first action, in the Nigerian Government’s intensions, should be followed by other initiatives concerning the stone sector.
